Shore Tope

On the  20th of June, I was down in Fethard starting a weeks holiday with the family. Joe and Aidan were down to try for tope on another Wexford beach. There was no way i was getting the green light to go fishing the first night of the holiday.

Joe takes up the story.

Myself and Aidan arrived at the mark at about 8pm. High tide was to be around eleven. We had fresh mackeral baits and were fishing clipped up running ledgers specially made for the trip. The weather was gorgeous with little breeze. We were soon set up with baits in the water. We started picking up a good bit of weed so had to change baits regularly. The fishing was slow to be honest with just a few dogs.

I was rooting around for something in my tacklebox when Aidan let a roar Joe Your Rod!!! I looked and the rod was going mental. I took the rod from the stand and the fish started peeling line off the reel which felt like forever but it was probably only a minute or two.

When it slowed down i tightened the drag and struck into the fish. It made more runs so i backed off the drag again. Soon it was close enough for Aidan to tail.

Elated we took loads of pictures and i was still shaking from adrenlaline. The fish went back and swam off strongly after we let it catch its breadth for a few minutes.
