Twaithe shad and carp by Aidan

Joe picked me up at 3.00am bleary eyed. Our plan was was to fish as much as possible befre being due home at 1.00pm the next day for a christening. First port of call was St.Mullins for a bit of shad fishing. Paddy was down the evening before and had a few fish though no specimens.

St. Mullins is one of the most scenic spots to fish in Ireland and we were soon piling out of the van and getting rods together.

We were soon lined up with the other anglers already there for the morning session. On my third cast I got one and was delighted to slip the net under it. We had a few a fish each up to 2.3lbs and we could have stayed longer but we left at 9.30

We headed off to Cork with Joe trying to sleep in the back of the van to fish a rock mark but all was quiet. So after a few fruitless hours we set off to the Lough in Cork city to try for carp. When we arrived about six there was a few people fishing but were heading off as the fish were spawning. We still had till the next morning to fish so we were happy to stick it out. So we went off to get a chinese  and afterwards started setting up and getting baits in the water and settled in for the night.

At 2.00am Joe had a dropped run but I was stuck to my bed after the early start. Then at 4.00am I had a few beeps and jumped out still half asleep. With no more beeps I thought  that was the chance gone. As I was now out of the bivvy i thought i might as well have a slash by a tree,  when halfway through, the alarm tore off. I somehow managed to stop it midflow and dove for the rod!

Thankfully it was soon in the net and Joe was now up too. We measured the fish and weighed it before setting it on its way again with the fish coming in at 16.7lb

At half seven I got another run and struck into another solid fish, but unfortunately it got off. We gave it another couple of hours but no more fish. All too soon it was time to take down the bivvy and gather up the gear…..rods left till last of course! Then back in the van for the journey home. We will be back again soon….
