I decided to give the tope a go on Saturday night. I gave Paddy and Joe a ring but neither could get out. I left home at 9pm to get to a well known Wicklow beach and was soon setting up the rods and getting baits in the water.
The sea was flat calm and besides a procession of dogfish the night was fairly uneventful. A few sambos later and more doggies, I was just making tea…. typical! when I got a proper bite. I struck in and felt something solid on the end.
The fish was leading me down the beach with the tide, making strong runs. Getting it in close enough to tail, I dropped the rod and grabbed it. I brought it up the beach and measured it 156cm length and 52cm girth.
I was on my own so the self timer on the camera would have to do. I manged to get two pics, before releasing the fish where it swam off strongly.
The fish took a whole mackeral, on a wire pulley with a 6/0 pennell
