Wicklow tope and Kerry Undulate ray

After a hectic week with work and getting ready for the family holiday to Kerry, I haven’t been able to post, so on Saturday my holidays began with a trip out with Kit Dunne http://www.wicklowboatcharters.com

As always I had a great day with Kit, with plenty of hounds though no big ones. It was flat calm and misty. It was a fish a drop and although we had no fresh mackeral the highlight was this tope caught on frozen mack. It was a great day out and a laugh as always thanks Kit, I’ll be looking forward to the next one.

The Next morning we were off to Kerry for a week with the kids. We met Joe White and his family there and were soon settling in. Last night was our first session and Martin McGowan had given us John Joe Sheehan’s number for fresh bait. A quick call to John Joe and bait was sorted and with a kind offer to fish with us. The first mark was perfect with no weed, until we started getting plagued by crabs and had to move. So off to another mark for an hour or two remaining of the tide. More crabs but we were able to fish through. A friend of John Joe’s further up the pier brought in a smallish undulate ray, which put a spring in our step. About an hour later with I got a fairly delicate bite and the rod arched around slowly. I struck into a fish and as it came into sight of the lads, a shout of ‘undulate’ and that was me happy.

The fish was weighed at 7.25lb and I was delighted to have my first ever undulate ray. John Joe tagged the fish before being released. We must say a huge thanks to John Joe and Martin thanks lads.
