Smoothounds 20.06.15

It was a gorgeous day as Aidan, Ross Macklin and myself met up in Wicklow harbour. We were going to be fishing with our good friend Kit Dunne who is the owner of

The fishing had been excellent leading up to our trip, so as we left the harbour Kit briefed us on our options. We decided to fish a couple of hours for tope and then switch over to smoothies. We scoffed a breakfast roll on the way and as we passed Wicklow head we stopped to feather up some fresh mackeral which were easily found.

We steamed on to the first mark and as soon as we were anchored up we got some fresh baits down. The tide was pushing quite hard and we sat down and done what everyone does on a charter boat…… talk more fishing!

We gave it a couple of hours but with the tope not coming out to play today so Kit decided to move to another mark where he had some super smoothound fishing the day before.

With rigs changed over we started preparing a few crab baits to be ready for when we got there. With minimum fuss Kit had us perfectly anchored up and we got the baits backdown. In no time at all, Ross got a good bite on his uptider, it seemed to be a good fish but the line snapped as it grated off a patch of rough ground.

He didn’t have to wait long before he got his next bite which again turned out to be a good fish. As soon as we seen it we knew it was a double figure hound and Kit scooped it into the net. It was 12.5lb and a new specimen species for Ross.

Next up was Aidan who caught another beautie this time of 12.4lb which gave a great scrap, and as he played this fish Ross got another bite which resulted in another 8lber. With both fish aboard it was good to get some double hook up shots.

Everyone was in high spirits and the slagging was fierce. By this stage I was still to get one and it was tense wait in store for me before I finally got one. I felt a couple of plucks and then nothing, so I lifted the weight to let the bait flutter back down and bang it was fish on as the fish started to take line.

We had an excellent day with great weather and company, plenty of laughs and as always Kit putting us on the fish thanks Kit we learned a lot. For a great days fishing be sure to give him a call.
