The last voyage of 2016 by Alan Kelly

Going back a few weeks . With the days getting shorter and the weather starting to change for the worst I seen an weather window to take ” Lauren M ” for what was going to be probably the  last boat trip of 2016. ( Lauren M is my fishing platform  out on the seas she is a Orkney  Fastliner 19  with a 50hp yamaha ) A Call was made to my fishing buddie Robert Loftus to hit the seas.

The next morning we meet at the pier loaded up Lauren M with our rods abd tackle of choice. First drift was to  hopefully get a few mackeral  for bait. They where far between at this stage of the year but we manages a few.

Rods safely stood ,  found our seats  and open up the yamaha  with the Burren on our left and galway shore line to our left headed to the mark of choice.

First drift over the mark was very fast, me thinking hummm not good we won’t connect with fish.

Changed direction  and on the second  drift we hit the fish. Robert was first off with a lovely  cuckoo wrasse.  followed by a shot of pouting while I was still waiting my first bite bang over  my rod a nice pollock to around 5 lbs.

After a few more drifts and Pleanty of species coming on board we decided to  call it a day.

But as we all know you really have to have one more last drift. Rods out bait down my rod slowly  pulled over strange take no shake of a head no run just dead weight .  got it to the surface  and to my delight and cracker of a Trigger Fish in at 3 lbs 8oz. photos taken by Robert . Two happy chaps heading home….
